NHL Early Season Report -NHL Picks, Odds & Betting Trends: The 2009/2010 NHL season has certainly had it's surprises, maybe more than in any year I can remember the exception is the rule. If someone had told me that after 13 games the Colorado Avalanche would have a 10-1-2 record be 5 points up on the Western Conference's second place team The LA Kings (Yes Really), the year after long time, leader and Captain Joe Sakic retired and that Craig Anderson would be the front runner for both the MVP and the Vezina Trophy I would have taken that action at any odds. Plus Phoenix? is in fifth... Has any team every faced more off-season questions or team adversity, I am actually beginning to wonder if Hockey can work in Phoenix - It's like a dream for the NHL just as they become buyers, after years of being worthless the team is increasing the franchise fee with every win. Does anyone remember the Drama? Bettman, Basille, Moyes, Gretzxy, the City of Phoenix battled it out in court and against reason and all common sense - The Team and Fans (in Phoenix) Won. Yet here we are, just a couple weeks into the season and Vancouver, Detroit, Anaheim and St Louis are all out of the playoff picture based on their standings today (all made it last year) I would predict maybe two of these teams climb back into the playoffs and all should be factors in the race but it is starting to seem more likely than I ever thought possible that Detroit and Anaheim could be on the outside looking in. Then move to the Eastern Conference less surprises the NE will be tough Ottawa and Buffalo both seem like their back to stay but the big surprise to me is Carolina after stealing two playoff series they are 0-4-2 on the road and on a 7 game losing skid. In last seasons playoffs Eric Staal was one of the most dominate players plus this team locked Cam Ward up long term, one would think this team could have moved up... But both Carolina and Boston are as of today out of the picture.Bet on Hockey at Sportsbook.com
So in this Topsy-Turvy NHL climate what represents a good value team? and what should a bettor look for? After following the trends closely three things have really stood out. 1. Goaltending - This stat always stands out as a matrix to follow GA/G (Goals Allowed Game) - The Leaders in this category are all near the top of their division. With a couple exceptions we will look at later on the top 10; Buf, Phx, Col, Pit, Chi, NJD, Van, Stl, Dal, SJ 2. Shots Against per Game or SA/G speaks to the work load of the goalie there is a reason only one or two goalies have one the cup with over 65 starts it's taxing on the goaltender there body and mind wear down and down comes the GA/G 3. 5-5 Goals For/Against Ratio most under rated stat in any sport anywhere is your team winning in the normal game mode of 5-5? If your going to wager over a long time track this stat. Bet on Hockey at Sportsbook.com

NHL Picks - Atlanta Trashers vs Washington Capitals: The Washington Capitals take on the Atlanta Thrashers in NHL Picks action today. The Capitals come into this one after having clinched their second straight division title and hope to avoid a let down versus the Trashers in tonight's NHL Picks action. The Capitals are an impressive 47-23-8 in NHL Picks this season but are coming off a tough 5-4 loss to Buffalo in their last NHL Picks game. Although they clinched their division the Capitals are still in a fight for the second overall seed with the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference. The Thrashers come into this NHL Picks game sitting at 34-38-6 but continue to play hard down the stretch as they have won four straight and five of their last six NHL Picks, including wins over the top three contenders for the last playoff spot in the East. They beat Florida 3-1 on Friday night, Buffalo 3-2 in overtime two days earlier and the New York Rangers on March 26. The Thrashers have been no slouch versus the Capitals in NHL Picks as they have won two of four NHL PIcks contests. However, they have struggled on the road as they are 0-2 at Washington. Power Play performance could spell the difference in this one ast Atlanta's penalty-killing unit ranks near the bottom of the league at 75.4 percent while Washington has a chance to lead the league in power-play percentage for the first time in its history, taking advantage of 25.6 percent of its opportunities. The Capitals have hit 42.9% on the power play in their last four NHL Picks games. Trends/Angles: WASHINGTON is 14-1 ATS (+12.4 Units) revenging a loss where opponent scored 4 or more goals this season while ATLANTA is 10-4 ATS (+16.5 Units) after successfully covering the spread in 2 or more consecutive games this season. NHL Picks: New Jersey Devils vs Buffalo Sabres Betting Odds and Predictions: The New Jersey Devils travel to Buffalo in NHL Picks ation tonight and will try and stay on track after snapping their six game losing streak last night. The losing streak was their longest in 23 seasons. The win put the Devils at 48-26-4 on the season. Last night's win put the Devils six points ahead of Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division and only two points behind the Capitals for the Conference second seed, as they reached the 100 point level for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
The Buffalo Sabres come into this NHL Picks contest fighting for their playoff lives. Last night they pulled out a 5-4 overtime win versus the Washington Capitals and now trail the New York Rangers by four points for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres have had some success in NHL Picks versus the Devils winning two of three this year. Buffalo will be going against goaltender Martin Brodeur for the first time this season. Brodeur has struggled recently going 0-5-1 with a 3.65 GAA in his last six starts and stopped only seven of 10 shots last night. However, Brodeur has been effective versus the Sabres as he is 12-3-1 with a tie in his last 17 starts. Trends/Angles: NEW JERSEY is 16-5 ATS (+10.8 Units) in road games after having lost 3 of their last 4 games over the last 3 seasons while BUFFALO is 5-13 ATS (-13.7 Units) after winning their previous game in overtime over the last 2 seasons. However, BUFFALO is 13-4 ATS (+7.8 Units) after playing 2 consecutive road games this season. Buffalo goaltender, Ryan Miller is 3-0-1 since returning from a 13-game absence and is 1-1-0 with a 2.53 GAA against New Jersey this season. NHL Picks - Buffalo Sabres vs Washington Capitals: The Buffalo Sabres hope to keep their slim NHL Picks playoff hopes alive tonight as they play their first of three versus top Stanley Picks contenders when they gravel to Washington. The Sabres have five games left on the NHL Picks season and trail the eighth place New York Rangers by six points. Buffalo has two games in hand on the Rangers but they also need to leap frog the ningth place Florida Panthers. Buffalo potentially ran themselves out of the NHL Picks playoffs last month with starting goaltender, Ryan Miller, went down with a ankle injury. Miller did return recently and the Sabres proceeded to win three in a row last week but did miss an opportunity to gain another point in the NHL Picks standings when they lost 3-2 in overall to Atlanta. One thing going for the Sabres tonight is that Miller has had success versus the Capitals going 8-3-0 with a 2.53 goals-against average in his career.
The Washington Capitals come into this NHL Picks contest assured of a playoff spot and with fives game left are looking to grab the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. They have won two in a row and lead the third place New Jersey Devis by three points. The Capitals are lead by leading scorer Alexander Ovenchkin who scored his 54th goal in their last NHL Picks win over the Islanders. Ovechkin now has four goals and three assists in his last three games and has reached 100 points for the third time in his four NHL seasons. The five goals that the Caps scored in their last NHL Picks game was the third time in their last five contests after going the previous 12 games without doing it, and they've scored 14 goals while winning three straight home games after a four-game losing streak at the Verizon Center. Trends/Angles: BUFFALO is 1-7 ATS (-8.1 Units) after losing their previous game in overtime this season but 12-5 ATS (+6.8 Units) in road games after playing 2 consecutive road games over the last 2 seasons. WASHINGTON is 13-3 ATS (+8.4 Units) after 3 straight games with 33 or more shots on goal over the last 3 seasons but only 50-63 ATS (-42.0 Units) in home games after playing 2 consecutive home games since 1996. Washington beast the Sabres on both December 26 and 30 for the first in the series since the 2002-03 season, and can win the season series for the first time since then with a win over the Sabres tonight. NHL Picks - Chicago Blackhawks vs Montreal Canadians Odds and Predictions: The Chicago Blackhawks, sitting 4th in the Western Conference with 91 points visit the Montreal Canadians in NHL Picks action. The Hawks had a three game winning streak snapped by Vancouver on Sunday but have really struggled recently losing 8 of their last 12 overall. They have had trouble versus the Canadians when in Montreal going only 3-6 in NHL picks action. Chicago has had a potent offense this season as they rank 3rd overall in the NHL averaging 3.22 goals per game. Their goaltending has been respectable as they rank 7th overall allowing an identical 3.22 goals against. This will be the first meeting between these two teams. The Montreal Canadians come into this NHL picks contest fighting for their playoff lives. They currently sit in the 8th and final spot in the Eastern Conference but are only 1 point in front of the Florida Panthers and four points in front of the hard charging Buffalo Sabres. Montreal had their two game winning streak snapped by the Sabres back on Saturday but have been struggling as well losing 8 of their last 12 NHL Picks games as well. They can most blame their goaltending for their recent swoon as they have allowed a whopping 3.8 goals per game. The Canadians offense hasn't been able to keep pace averaging 2.92 goals per game and rank 13th in the league. Trends/Angles: MONTREAL is 10-15 ATS (-13.5 Units) in home games after a home game where both teams score 3 or more goals over the last 3 seasons but an impressive 22-5 ATS (+13.0 Units) in home games against horrible power play killing teams-opp score on >19% of chances in the 2nd half of the year over the last 3 seasons.
